As the Awami League announced him as its presidential candidate today, Md Shahabuddin Chuppu, a retired district and sessions judge, former commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), and freedom fighter, is poised to become the next president of Bangladesh.
Parliamentarians can vote in the presidential election, as stated in the Bangladeshi Constitution. The Awami League currently holds a total majority in the parliament.
In such circumstances, no party other than the Awami League could possibly nominate a candidate for the presidential election.
The nomination was presented to the Election Commission (EC) on Sunday morning (12 February) by a team headed by the General Secretary of the Bangladesh Awami League and Minister of Road Transport and Bridges, Obaidul Quader.
