South Gaza: Israeli Attack on ‘Safe Zone’ Kills 90 Palestinians

In a designated humanitarian zone in Gaza, an Israeli attack yesterday resulted in at least 90 Palestinian deaths and 300 injuries, the bloodiest toll in weeks, according to the enclave’s health ministry.

Tens of thousands of people have taken refuge in the tent city of Al-Mawasi, but the shelling has prevented Gaza’s civil defense agency’s workers from reaching the victims there.

Following orders to evacuate from other places, the Israeli army has repeatedly urged Palestinians to go to the targeted spot, which is a designated humanitarian area.

In Reuters video, displaced people—including women and children—were seen running away in terror while clutching some of their possessions.

Many of the attack’s victims were sent to the nearby Nasser Medical Center, which hospital officials claimed was “no longer able to function” due to the intensity of the Israeli offensive and a dire shortage of medical supplies.

At least 20 Palestinians were killed in an Israeli attack on a prayer hall at a camp for displaced people in west Gaza City, according to authorities from the Palestinian health and civil emergencies ministry.

Over 38,000 Palestinians have died as a result of Israel’s military assault on the enclave since October 7, according to the enclave’s health ministry.

The Israeli assertions that Hamas had targeted the group’s military chief, Mohammed Deif, were refuted by the group in a statement, which was meant to provide cover for the strike.

Due to the suicide bombs that claimed the lives of numerous Israelis, Deif has been on Israel’s most wanted list for decades. She has escaped seven attempts at Israeli assassination, the most recent of which occurred in 2021.

Rafa Salama, the leader of Hamas’ Khan Younis Brigade, was reportedly also the target of the Israeli military’s attack against Deif.

In addition to “targeted, intelligence-based” actions in Rafah, south of the Gaza Strip, the Israeli army announced that operations were still underway in southeast Gaza City.
