Metropolis Report-
In a verdict given today, the High Court ruled that educational institutions cannot require any applicant for admission to divulge their marital status.
After hearing arguments about a rule that in December 2017 called into question the legitimacy of educational institutions asking for information on applicants’ marital status, the High Court’s panel of Justices Naima Haider and Md. Khairul Alam issued its decision.
The HC issued the rule on December 11, 2017, disputing the legitimacy of the educational institutions’ action inquiring about the marital status of applicants for admission in response to a writ petition submitted by Supreme Court attorney Fahriya Ferdous.
In the ruling, the court requested an explanation as to why this should not be ruled illegal. During the hearing about the ruling, attorney Aneek R. Haque represented the writ petitioner.
