Sudden Snowfall and Intense Rains Cause at least 35 Deaths in Pakistan

Metropolis Desk-

As freezing rain and unexpected snowfall struck remote areas of Pakistan over the weekend, the BBC reports that at least 35 people have died and numerous others have been injured.

Citing the country’s disaster management authorities, the report on Tuesday stated that twenty-two children were among the dead, many of them crushed in landslides that buried their homes.

The BBC said that hundreds of homes were damaged and highways became clogged as a result of the severe weather that struck Pakistan’s western and northern areas. Experts were surprised by the snow as Pakistan is typically humid in March.

Former head of the nation’s meteorological bureau Mushtaq Ali Shah linked the anomalous weather to climate change.

A brief hailstorm lasting “for a few moments” wouldn’t be as shocking, he continued, but it would be unusual for it to stay longer than thirty minutes.

At least 150 dwellings, predominantly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the southwest region of Balochistan, were totally destroyed by the intense rains, while 500 more suffered partial damage, according to authorities.
