Metropolis Report-
To regasify more imported liquefied natural gas (LNG), Summit Group plans to build the nation’s third floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) in Moheshkhali in Cox’s Bazar. It would be Summit Oil and Shipping Co. Ltd.’s second FSRU or floating LNG terminal.
The request from the Ministry of Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources was approved on Wednesday by the cabinet committee on economic affairs.
Floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) are multipurpose ships that have onboard LNG storage and built-in regasification equipment. Regasification is the procedure used to turn LNG into a gas. The national grid is then supplied with the gas.
There are now two FSRUs in the nation, each with a daily regasification capacity of roughly 500 million cubic feet of gas (mmcf). The replacement unit will be able to regasify 600 mmcf of gas per day. Bangladesh presently uses between 750 and 850 mmcf per day from the two operating FSRUs, according to Petrobangla data.
The approval was granted under the contentious Quick Enhancement of Electricity and Energy Supply (Special Provision) Act 2010, which was revised in 2021, according to the meeting minutes.
Late in 2018, the nation started importing LNG. The committee also agreed to a proposal to purchase 33.6 lakh MMbtu of LNG from US company Excelerate Energy LP for Tk 574.65 crore. The price per unit will be $13.9.
