On Sunday, the Swiss people voted overwhelmingly in support of a package that would have enacted new climate regulations to drastically reduce the country’s emissions of greenhouse gases.
The final results, which were made public by the state broadcaster SRF, revealed that 59.1 percent of voters supported the measure, while 40.9 percent opposed it.
A campaign by scientists and environmentalists to safeguard Switzerland’s famous glaciers, which are disappearing at an alarming rate, served as the impetus for the referendum.
The government’s plan, which calls for Switzerland to reach “net zero” emissions by 2050, was eventually backed by activists who had earlier sought far more ambitious steps. Additionally, it sets aside about 3 billion Swiss francs ($3.357 billion) to aid in the transition of businesses and households away from fossil fuels.
The nationalist Swiss People’s Party had argued that the proposed measures would raise electricity prices and had thus demanded a vote by the general public.
