Ten Tress Plantation for One Chopped Tree: HC

Metropolis Report – 

The  Supreme  Court  ruled  yesterday (Wednesday)  that   about  10 trees must be  planted   if   trees   are   cut   down.  

“If   it   is   necessary   for   the   public   interest,   one  or two trees can be cut  down   with   the  permission  of  the  authorities.  Trees cannot be  felled   en   masse,”  HC  Justice Abu Taher  Mod   Saiful  Rahman and  AKM  Justice  Rabiul Hassan said during  a   Suomot   (voluntary)   verdict  hearing  on  the  Korapala   incident.   Patuakari  30 palm trees  were   cut   down   while   country   roads   were   narrowing. 

The court made  comments to  Mamnul   Rashid,   head   of   the  Climate  Resilient   Project   for  Rural  Infrastructure,  who appeared before the  court   as   per   previous   instructions. 

The bench fixed July 31 for delivering verdict on the rule.

After   reports  and  editorials   were  published on the  incident   of   30   palm   trees   being   cut   down   by   excavators   in   Nadirpur   village   of   the   Mohipur   Union   for   road   construction   in   Kolapara   upazila  on May 4 and  6,   respectively,   May   5.   The   Suomut   Regulations   were   issued  on  May   7.
