Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, has stated that the electric vehicle manufacturer will enter India “as soon as humanly possible.”
Following a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is paying a state visit to the US, he made these remarks.
The Indian government announced that it has invited Mr. Musk to look into potential opportunities in the field of commercial space travel and electric transportation.
According to Mr. Musk, he was “trying to figure out the right timing” to bring about that.
A few days before Mr. Modi met with Mr. Musk, who is also the owner of Twitter, Jack Dorsey, the co-founder of the social media platform, accused India of threatening to shut down the platform if it did not comply with its requests that content be removed from the website.
The Indian government vehemently refuted Mr. Dorsey’s accusations, calling them “an outright lie” in an interview with an independent news program.
On Wednesday, Elon Musk responded to the incident and claimed that Twitter had no choice but to follow local laws or “we will get shut down.”
He promised, “We will do our best to provide the freest speech that is permitted by law.”
Additionally, Mr. Musk identified himself as a “fan” of Mr. Modi and asserted that India held “more promise than any other large nation in the world.”
He (Mr. Modi) cares about India, as seen by the fact that he is pressuring us to make large investments there, which is something we want to do. We are simply attempting to determine the best timing, he told reporters. Tesla will arrive in India, I’m sure, and as fast as is humanly possible.
Tesla has been in talks with Indian bureaucrats and ministers as it looks to enter the domestic market.
Tesla had suggested establishing an electric vehicle factory and was considering producing EV batteries in the nation. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, a government minister, had told the agency in May that “they are very seriously looking at India as a production and innovation base.”
Last year, the company’s first intentions to establish a base in India were canceled as the Indian government required Tesla to produce cars there rather than exporting them to the country first to gauge demand.
Mr. Musk stated that he also planned to bring India’s Starlink satellite internet service, which is run by his business SpaceX.
Although we don’t want to make an announcement too soon, he said, “I believe it is quite likely that there will be a significant investment in our relationship with India.”
The three-day state visit by Mr. Modi, which is being hailed as a turning point in the bilateral relationship between India and the US, began on Tuesday.
Before having face-to-face conversations with President Joe Biden on Thursday, he will receive a formal welcome at the White House.
In a letter to Mr. Biden on Tuesday, more than 70 US congressmen urged him to bring up the subject of human rights with Mr. Modi while in India. They expressed alarm over India’s rising religious intolerance, restrictions on journalistic freedom, and persecution of civil society organizations.
