A Dhaka court has formally indicted TikTok personality Abdullah Al Mamun, better known as Prince Mamun, in connection with a case involving assault and an alleged attempt to murder.
On Tuesday, Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Md Mahbubul Haque rejected Mamun’s request for the case to be dismissed and issued the indictment order, according to the plaintiff’s lawyer, Israt Hasan.
Both Mamun and the plaintiff, Laila Akhter Farhad, were present during the court proceedings.
The trial will begin with witness testimony on March 1.
Laila filed the case with Cantonment police on December 12, 2023, stating that she had met Mamun on Facebook, and the two started a romantic relationship. The two later agreed to marry with the approval of their families. Mamun subsequently moved into Laila’s home in Baridhara DOHS after their engagement.
The case claims that Mamun repeatedly demanded money from Laila under various pretexts, often returning home late, intoxicated, and physically assaulting her while making unreasonable demands.
On December 11, 2023, after attending a birthday party, Mamun planned to go drinking in Mirpur with two others. The case documents state that Laila attempted to stop him, but Mamun became angry, cursed her, and, when asked to stop, began beating her and even allegedly tried to kill her.
Following an investigation, the Cantonment police submitted a chargesheet against Mamun on January 31, 2024. The court accepted the chargesheet on June 3 and issued an arrest warrant for Mamun, who had gone into hiding.
Mamun surrendered to the court the following day and was granted bail.
