Tragic Boat Accident Claims 20 Lives in Eastern Afghanistan, Official Reports

In the eastern Nangarhar province of Afghanistan, a boat capsized on Saturday during a river crossing, killing twenty people—including children—a provincial official reported.

Head of the province’s communications department Quraishi Badloon posted on social media platform X that a boat carrying women and children sank on Saturday morning at 7 am (0230 GMT) in the river in the Basawul area of Momand Dara district in eastern Nangarhar.

He said that the accident was being looked into and that five persons had survived.

In a message shared with the media, the Nangarhar Information and Culture Department stated that the authorities had dispatched ambulances and a medical team to the region.

Provincial government representatives stated that at least five bodies had been found and that searches were being conducted for the other ones.

As there is no bridge nearby, local media stated that residents in the area frequently use boats—often in bad condition—to cross the river.
