In order to aid the people of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank who have been devastated by violence, the UN will launch a $2.8 billion plea for donations on Wednesday, according to a senior agency official.
Andrea De Domenico, head of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in the Palestinian territories, said that the “flash appeal” funds humanitarian needs through the end of 2024.
“Today, in a video press conference, we will make a $2.8 billion appeal on behalf of the entire humanitarian community to support the three million people identified throughout the West Bank and Gaza,” he declared.
De Domenico continued, “Of course, ninety percent is for Gaza.”
He said that “the original request was for $4 billion but considering the limited ability to deliver (aid) and the space that we have to do so we have really focused on the highest priority.”
A few days following the remarkable Israeli attack on Gaza on October 7, the UN issued a $294 million emergency appeal.
Early in November, that request was revised and increased to $1.2 billion in order to address the most pressing needs of 500,000 people in the West Bank and 2.2 million people in Gaza in 2023.
The UN has issued a warning that thousands of Gazans could starve to death, especially in the north of the enclave where food and relief supplies have been sparsely distributed.
