While addressing an event organized to mark the International Day of UN Peacekeepers-2023 at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC), Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh believes in peace and would do all possible things required to establish peace.
She said: “We want a peaceful solution to any conflict. We don’t want an arms race because women, children, and each family suffer the most for it. Therefore, our goal is to protect them from the sufferings.”
Maintaining peace is more challenging today than it has ever been as wicked forces are using technology as a means of sabotaging peace, according to Sheikh Hasina.
The premier said that her government has always given Bangladeshi peacekeepers the most up-to-date training to handle hard situations in the most dangerous parts of the world.
A moment of silence was observed before the ceremony began to honor the lives of the warriors who gave their all to bring about peace. At the ceremony, a video documentary titled “Bangladesh in Global Peace” was screened.
Five deceased peacekeepers got accolades from the prime minister. Five wounded peacekeepers received honors from her as well. Later on, the Premier launched the International Peacekeeper Journal. The topic “Peace Begins with Me” for the 2023 International UN Peacekeepers Day, according to the prime minister, is quite timely.
7,436 Bangladeshi peacekeepers are currently serving in UN peacekeeping missions and operations, making up around 9.8% of all peacekeepers deployed globally. This number includes 572 female peacekeepers from Bangladesh.
Bangladeshi peacekeepers are currently working on 14 UN missions and projects. Twenty Bangladesh Army contingents, two Bangladesh Navy contingents, four Bangladesh Air Force contingents, and three Bangladesh Police contingents are participating in these missions.
