Celeste Saulo, a renowned Argentine meteorologist, has been chosen to run the UN meteorological service for the first time as a woman.
Celeste Saulo gained the required two-thirds backing from member governments on Thursday, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) reported.
Since 2014, Saulo has led the National Meteorological Service of Argentina.
Petteri Taalas, the WMO’s secretary general for the past two years, will be replaced by her at the end of the year. Saulo joined the WMO executive council in 2015.
The institution is essential in coordinating worldwide meteorological work, which has grown increasingly important as a result of the harsh weather brought on by climate change.
