Metropolis Report-
It will be very unfortunate if the country faces fresh sanctions, according to Bangladesh’s foreign minister, AK Abdul Momen.
“No justification exists for a new sanction. I don’t know anything about it. It depends on individual countries,” he said at a press conference.
Momen told reporters during a briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s upcoming travel to Qatar, which will begin this afternoon, “We hope good sense will prevail.”
The minister commented on a report in the newspaper Kalbela yesterday stating that the US would impose fresh sanctions on authorities and lawmakers for undermining democracy, human rights, and corruption.
It was quite unusual and unexpected. In the Kalbela report, no reference or source is stated, according to Momen.
He claimed that US Deputy Assistant Secretary Afreen Akhter had visited Bangladesh and given a glowing report on it.
Bangladesh would require LNG from Qatar on a quota basis, according to Momen, during the Prime Minister’s visit to the country.
It currently exports a significant amount of oil to Bangladesh, and as a result of the energy shortage caused by the Russia-Ukraine war, Dhaka will look to import additional energy.
Although no agreements may be inked during the visit, the conversation about LNG import will advance, he said.
