People of the country will never accept vote riggers, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said today. She made reference to February 15, 1996, and claimed that the nation’s citizens did not accept vote manipulation, forcing BNP to resign from office.

At the Awami League’s 22nd national council opening at Suhrawardy Udyan, AL President Hasina made the comment.

“We ensured people’s voting right, which is also a constitutional right of a citizen. To appoint the Election Commission, we passed legislation. We streamlined the procedure and made everything transparent.”

“Why should we pass the Election Commission formation law if there was a plot to rig the election? If we had intended to rig the election, we would have created a commission similar to Aziz’s (MA Aziz Commission).”

The premier arrived at Suhrawardy Udyan earlier, around 10:20 am. She raised the flag of the country, released a white pigeon, and let go of balloons to officially open the council.

She was accompanied by AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader at the time. In order to prevent the war between Russia and Ukraine, the prime minister encouraged world leaders to act.

“We oppose both war and sanctions. The result of the conflict is known. The worst affected groups are women and children. I would strongly urge the world’s leaders to put an immediate end to the war,” she said.
