During a four-day visit to Japan, Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus emphasized the interim government’s commitment to conducting a free and fair election by June 2026, stating it will proceed “under any circumstance.”
He reiterated this pledge during a meeting with former Japanese Prime Minister and Japan-Bangladesh Parliamentary Friendship League President, Taro Aso, at Tokyo’s Imperial Hotel on Wednesday.
Yunus highlighted that the interim government’s primary objectives include implementing reforms, prosecuting those responsible for the July movement’s casualties, and facilitating the upcoming general election.
He noted significant economic progress, particularly in stabilizing the banking sector, rebuilding foreign exchange reserves, and debt repayment.
Expressing gratitude for Japan’s unwavering support over the past ten months, Yunus described his visit as a “thank you tour” and invited Aso to Bangladesh to witness the ongoing transformations firsthand.
Japanese lawmakers accompanying Aso suggested that signing the Economic Partnership Agreement could enhance Japanese investment in Bangladesh.
