Yunus Urges Global Community to Forge New Connections with ‘New Bangladesh’

Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has asked world leaders to take a “new approach” when interacting with the burgeoning “new Bangladesh.”

As the head of the 170 million-strong Bangladeshi population, Yunus addressed the UN, stating: “I call upon the international community to continue and deepen engagements with Bangladesh in meeting our people’s quest for democracy, the rule of law, equality, and prosperity, so that we can emerge as a just and inclusive democratic society.”

A movement calling for the reform of government job quotas, which began in July, eventually turned into a widespread uprising against the government. The Awami League’s 15-year rule came to an end on August 5, when Sheikh Hasina fled to India.

This uprising, the bloodiest in Bangladesh’s history since independence, claimed over 800 lives, writing a new chapter in the nation’s history.

Nobel laureate Yunus leads an interim government that has taken over and is implementing a number of reform initiatives that align with the demands of the demonstrators.

“I would call upon the international community to engage with ‘new Bangladesh,’ a new that aims to realize freedom and democracy, beyond letters, for everyone,” Yunus said in his first speech as Bangladesh’s head of state at the UN General Assembly on Friday.

Upholding customs, the chief advisor donned his signature Grameen check Fatua and Koti and spoke in Bengali during his speech at this international gathering.

He emphasized the background of Bangladesh’s anti-discrimination student movement and the revolutionary changes it has brought about early in his speech.

Yunus expressed optimism, saying that “many across communities and countries, to stand for freedom and justice, may be inspired by the revolution’ that the world witnessed in Bangladesh in a matter of weeks.”

He described the reform measures implemented by the caretaker administration and emphasized how the previous Awami League government had left Bangladesh’s democratic system in “ruins.”

In order to guarantee the sustainability of these reforms and to foster an atmosphere that will facilitate the holding of free, fair, and participatory elections “Our goal is to set up efficient safeguard mechanisms.”

Presenting the new government’s foreign policy to global leaders, Yunus stated that Bangladesh is keen to establish and preserve amicable ties with every country founded on reciprocal dignity, respect, and common interests.

He emphasized Bangladesh’s unwavering commitment to advancing justice, prosperity, and peace on a worldwide scale.
