Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in the United States on Sunday to participate in sessions at the UN General Assembly, urging his allies to help achieve “a shared victory for a truly just peace.”
In a post on X, shared during his nightly video address from his plane, Zelensky emphasized, “This fall will determine the future of this war.”
He made an unannounced visit to Scranton, Pennsylvania, President Joe Biden’s hometown, where he toured a munitions plant that is increasing production of crucial 155-millimeter artillery shells for Ukraine’s war effort. “It is in places like this where you can truly feel that the democratic world can prevail,” he remarked on X, sharing photos of himself thanking the workers.
Zelensky’s concerns over a shortage of munitions have intensified as Russia targets Ukraine’s energy infrastructure ahead of the critical winter months. In his video address, he stated that Ukraine is doing everything possible, both in terms of acquiring weapons and through diplomatic efforts, “to consolidate our partners’ support and compel Russia into peace.”
Zelensky then traveled to New York, where he was expected to meet with US business leaders to discuss Ukraine’s energy needs, as well as with heads of states and international organizations.
His visit aligns with US efforts to finalize a $375 million military aid package for Ukraine, marking a shift from previous smaller packages for Kyiv’s military operations. Zelensky plans to present a “victory plan” regarding Ukraine’s war against Russia first to Biden and will also discuss it with Vice President Kamala Harris on Thursday and with other global leaders.
Additionally, Zelensky hopes to meet with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who has criticized US aid to Ukraine and has not firmly stated his support for Ukraine’s victory. Trump has indicated he might meet with Zelensky this week, though no specific date has been set.
Two US officials informed Reuters on Friday that the expected aid package would include patrol boats, additional ammunition for high-mobility artillery rocket systems (HIMARS), 155- and 105-millimeter artillery ammunition, spare parts, and other weaponry. They noted that the package’s contents and size might change in the days leading up to Biden’s anticipated approval.
Ukrinform reported that Zelensky will address a UN summit on Monday, participate in Security Council meetings regarding Ukraine on Tuesday, and speak during the General Assembly on Wednesday.
