Despite the sanctions the US and the collective West have placed on Russia, Russia wishes to maintain its collaboration with Bangladesh, notably in the areas of trade, the economy, and the implementation of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project.

According to a statement from the Russian embassy, this was mentioned by Alexander Mantytskiy, the Russian ambassador to Bangladesh, during a meeting with Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, the speaker of the parliament, on Thursday.

As a result of the western sanctions against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine more than a year ago, the project ran into difficulties with its supply chains and financial activities.

69 US-sanctioned Russian ships were also prohibited from entering Bangladesh. A ship carrying nuclear power plant equipment that had been sanctioned had to be turned away by Dhaka. The equipment from the Russian ship that stopped in the Bay of Bengal was later transported by Bangladeshi ships.

Alexander Mantytskiy claimed that during their meeting with Speaker Shirin Sharmin, they discussed their shared desire to strengthen goodwill between the parliaments of Bangladesh and Russia, including through the relevant friendship groups set up for the exchange of national legislation’s best practices.
