BUET Students Continue Outrage for Expulsion of 6 Chatra League ‘Infiltrators’

Metropolis Desk-

The Chhatra League’s two days of political events on the campus of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) have been met with protests by students.

On Saturday at around eight in the morning, students congregated in front of the BUET Shaheed Minar to start the protest. They announced their demands at a press conference at 11 a.m.

Imtiaz Hossain Rahim, a 21st batch student in the civil engineering department and a member of the central Chhatra League committee, lost his hall seat when he organized an Awami League student wing demonstration on campus in defiance of an order. At the news conference, the protesting students declared their demand that Imtiaz and five other students be expelled for good.

The BUET campus forbade student politics in 2019 in response to a student-led protest against the beating death of Abrar Fahad. On Thursday night, however, the Chhatra League’s central president and office secretary showed up on campus late.

The student demonstrators claim that Imtiaz broke university regulations by arranging the event.

In addition to staging a sit-in outside the university’s office of the director of student welfare till the evening, the students on Friday conducted a press conference in front of the Shaheed Minar at BUET.

Later in the evening, Imtiaz’s hall seat was discarded in a note.

The students who were demonstrating on Saturday said that pictures and videos had been used to identify several of the people who had been with Imtiaz during the event. In addition, the demonstrators demanded that they be permanently barred from the institution and its buildings for violating policies and trying to bring their divisive political forces to the BUET campus.

At the news conference, the demonstrators said, “The BUET administration should immediately identify those who were involved but we have not been able to name and punish them in the same way.”
